The United Nations Volunteers Foundation is offering a volunteer opportunity in South Sudan to work as an Outreach Officer. This opportunity will run for 15 months with the possibility of extending it for a longer period. Determined by Resolution 2625 (2022) that the situation in South Sudan continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region, the Security Council, therefore, extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan until 15 March 2023, and also stressed that the mission should continue to advance its strategic vision to prevent a return to civil war, build lasting peace, and conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections in accordance with the revitalized peace agreement.
Duties & responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the team leader of the Outreach Unit, you will undertake the following tasks:
- Performing community outreach activities in support of the mission’s CDT which are in line with the Secretary-General’s new strategy on Special measures for the protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (A/71/818).
- Assisting with the development of public information strategies with specific deliverables in partnership with UN agencies, UNMISS sections, civil society and local authorities.
- Supporting the implementation of the strategic planning of outreach campaigns.
- Participating in the organization of workshops with key leaders, youth, and women’s groups in order to enhance public information amid a better knowledge of UN standards of conduct and reporting mechanisms amongst the local population.
- Assisting with developing productions and disseminating information and/or outreach materials (booklets, posters, videos) on topics related to Conduct and Discipline, including Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) in partnership with UNMISS, UN agencies, and [international and national] non-Governmental organizations (NGOs).
- Helping to establish and maintain good relationships with military and UN police information units and other relevant units.
- Performing other duties related to the daily functioning of CDT.
- Strengthen your knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
- Promote capacity development activities and transfer of skills to national personnel during the assignment.
- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- Your age should be between 27 and 80 years old.
- You must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.
- 3 years of experience in community outreach activities.
- Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and other office technology equipment.
- Experience in Communication, Community development, and Social work.
- Driving license for manual transmission cars.
- Be fluent in English.
- Working knowledge of Arabic.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Communications, Public relations, Social Sciences, or related fields.

- The climate is tropical with a rainy season in many areas, which should normally span from around April to October.
