Opportunity description

UN Volunteers platform is offering a volunteer opportunity in Amman, Jordan as a WASH Officer. 

UN Volunteer WASH Officer will be reporting and work under the overall guidance and direction of the Chief of WASH, and under the supervision of the WASH Officer leading the implementation of actions to increase access to safe water and sanitation services in most vulnerable communities.

Volunteer duration and working hours:

12 months (with possibility of extension). 


Duties & responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the WASH Officer, the UN Volunteer will:

Support for programme implementation and monitoring

Support the assessment and monitoring of field level activities in host / most vulnerable communities, including Palestinian camps, including but not limited to:

  • Technical assessments of WASH infrastructure at household, institutional and household level, to determine specific needs and guide implementation of works.
  • Rehabilitation of WASH infrastructure at household level, including water storage, sanitation facilities, among others.
  • Rehabilitation / enhancement of water supply / wastewater networks at community level, in close coordination with Government stakeholders/water and sanitation utility providers and contractors.
  • Other field level interventions

Eligibility criteria

  • Age 18 - 80
  • Nationality Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.
  • Required experience: 5 years of experience in Civil / WASH construction works at community, household and institutional levels. Familiarity with working with government stakeholders. Familiarity with climate resilience and adaptation / mitigation / DRR related areas would be an asset. • Previous experience in working with UNICEF / UN agencies is an asset • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Languages: Arabic, Level: Fluent, Required English, Level: Working knowledge, Required
  • Required education level: Master degree or equivalent in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas: Civil / Sanitary Engineering, Hydrology, Architecture. • Technical / engineering assessments for WASH related interventions • Water supply and sanitation/wastewater systems and services • Climate change, adaptation, and resilience • Computer skills in Ms. Office, including Ms. word, Ms. excel and Ms. powerpoint. • Familiarity with Civil Engineering applications (AutoCAD, Water CAD, EPANET) and GIS applications and would be an asset.
