UN Volunteers platform is offering a volunteer opportunity, at UNITAD in Baghdad, Iraq as a Criminal Analyst.

UNITAD is the Investigative Team mandated by Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da’esh) accountable their crimes by collecting, preserving, and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq. As an active UNITAD team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNITAD and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: prepares high-quality analytical reports providing assessments of evidence, the context in which they were committed, and their links to other crimes;

Duties & responsibilities

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Head of the Economic Crimes Unit or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Criminal Analyst will:

  • Reviews evidence to conduct factual analysis evidence related to financial aspects of international crimes;
  • Based on the review of evidence, prepares narrative of facts reports identifying crime patterns, the context in which they took place, and information on alleged perpetrators;
  • Prepares relational charts and timelines;
  • Effectively utilities the databases available for analysis, evidence and investigations, including by conducting advanced searches and preparing analytical output;
  • Identifies gaps of information and makes concrete proposals of steps to be undertaken to close those gaps;



Eligibility criteria

  • Age: 27 - 80
  • Nationality: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.
  • Languages: English, Level: Fluent, Required Arabic, Level: Fluent, Required
  • Required education level: Master degree or equivalent in Criminal law
  • Required experience:
  1. 3 years of experience in the national and/or international level in criminal investigations, criminal analysis, or evidence analysis, or other relevant programmes; experience with international crimes and international humanitarian law is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
  2. Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  3. Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  5. Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  6. Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  7. Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  8. Sound security awareness;
  9. Have affinity with or interest in international criminal investigations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
