Opportunity criteria
The School of Management (SOM) at Yale University is offering 22 consecutive months MBA for Executives (EMBA) program. This program combines the rigor of Yale SOM integrated core curriculum and leadership development program with advanced study in a chosen area at the nexus of business and society: asset management, healthcare, or sustainability.
Through intense and challenging coursework, interactions with academic experts and leading practitioners, and fostering new relationships with classmates and alumni in their field, students will build a foundation to elevate their leadership perspective and lead at the nexus of business and society. Fully participate in the intellectual life of Yale University, network with peers who bring rich and varied professional experience to an intimate classroom setting, and extend their lines of sight through the Global Network for Advanced Management.
Admission Requirements
- A four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the international equivalent is required. International applicants with a three-year degree from an accredited institution are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must have a minimum of seven years of post-undergraduate, full-time work experience (candidates with fewer years of work experience may be considered if they have demonstrated significant leadership experience through their employment or other experiences).
- There is no minimum EA, GMAT, or GRE score required to apply to Yale SOM. The school will consider the student’s scores in the context of their whole application.
- Yale SOM requires one of the standardized tests (Executive Assessment (EA), GMAT, or GRE) as part of a complete application. There are no waivers for this requirement.
Note: The Executive Assessment is specifically designed to evaluate the business school readiness of seasoned professionals. The assessment focuses on skills that are critical both at work and in an Executive MBA program: higher-order reasoning, critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving. Because it was designed specifically for experienced professionals, it requires modest preparation, takes only 90 minutes to complete, and includes flexible rescheduling options. The test is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), creators of the GMAT® exam.
- Essays and Area Focus
Applicants are required to submit two essays, as well as a shorter piece on their intended area of focus, with the following prompts:
- What is your motivation for applying for an Executive MBA at this point in your career? Please discuss your interest in the Yale SOM MBA for Executives program, your area of focus, and your professional and personal goals. (500 words maximum)
- Cite a statistic that you find shocking. As a leader for business and society, what actions could you take to address this challenge, and what would be your guiding principles and values? (500 words maximum)
- Why have you selected this area of focus? Please describe how your current professional role relates to your chosen area of focus. (Word count: 150-250 words)
There is also an optional essay, with the following prompt:
- If any aspect of your candidacy needs further explanation (unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, academic performance, promotions or recognition, etc.), please provide a brief description here. (200 words maximum)
Course Structure
Over the course of the 22-month program, students will have mandatory core courses, electives, optional sessions, and workshops, along with executive coaching, colloquia speakers, and other experiences that build advanced leadership knowledge and skills at the executive level.
Classes meet year-round on alternating Friday/Saturday weekends, with a 2-week in-residence period at the start of Year 1 plus a 1-week residence period to start Year 2.
Core Courses
Yale’s unique integrated core curriculum is a series of classes that are organized around stakeholder perspectives rather than narrow functional disciplines. The Yale approach puts an emphasis on viewing questions and problems from many perspectives and taking into account the connections between organizations and the broader society.
Area of Focus
The student’s chosen area of focus comprises about 25% of the MBA. Through colloquia and classes drawing on deep Yale expertise, get a fresh view of their industry and build relationships with classmates, alumni, and experts in their field.
Asset Management
Learn best practices across the principal asset classes, access cutting-edge Yale research in risk and behavioral finance, and understand the interplay of finance and society as you prepare to lead in asset management.
Healthcare
Gain a disciplined understanding of markets, organizations, and society in the context of the complex healthcare industry. Be inspired to lead change at the forefront of healthcare. Previous experience in the healthcare industry is required to be considered for this focus.
Sustainability
Drive transformative innovation and integrate sustainability throughout complex organizations, turning social and environmental challenges into opportunities. This focus is relevant to all industries and sectors.
Advanced Curriculum Components
Advanced Management Courses
Build on the lessons of the core curriculum and develop the strategic approach, business skills, and competencies needed to lead within an organization.
Self-Directed Study
Pursue a professional or personal topic of interest while taking advantage of the breadth of faculty expertise across Yale University. Research or entrepreneurial projects, case writing, additional electives, or innovative corporate projects have been popular choices in the past.
Global Offerings: Global Network Weeks & Courses
Yale is actively engaged with the Global Network for Advanced Management, which connects 30 top business schools from 28 countries across six continents. As a required part of the Yale EMBA curriculum, experience an EMBA-specific Global Network Week, choosing among leading Global Network member schools for a week of intensive study and immersion in an alternative business environment. Students also have the opportunity to take Global Network Courses, elective courses that are taught virtually and which connect students throughout the network to learn together and work in global teams.
Tuition Fees
The two-year, all-inclusive fee for students entering in July of 2021 is $198,500. This fee includes tuition, required textbooks, study materials, and breakfast and lunch on all class days, as well as lodging at the Omni New Haven Hotel during summer residencies and Friday evenings during class weekends. Also included are lodging and programming for the EMBA Global Network Week; students are responsible for travel and associated expenses (e.g. transport to/from airports, some meals, visa application fees, and immunization fees if applicable, etc.).
Students are required to stay at the Omni New Haven Hotel during the in-residence periods (the two weeks at the start of the first year and one week at the start of the second year) and on Friday evenings of class weekends during the first-year fall semester. Beyond these periods, the program–provided accommodation is optional.
Scholarships
Yale SOM provides a small number of partial scholarships to exceptional candidates for the MBA for Executives program. Recipients of these highly selective awards have a demonstrated track record of outstanding leadership at the intersection of business and society. Awards will be made to individuals whom the selection committee members believe will enhance the program experience through their distinctive perspectives and experiences. In addition to merit, demonstrated financial need will also play a role in determining award recipients.
To be considered for an award, applicants must submit the MBA for Executives application and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Results must be sent directly to Yale (Yale University Code: 001426).
