Opportunity description
The Brookings Institution is offering an internship program with WashU, a partnership of the Brookings Institution and Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) Olin School of Business in the USA. Interns spend approximately 10 weeks working alongside leading experts in government and academia from all over the world. Brookings also offers students the opportunity to intern in departments such as communications, human resources, and central operations management. The mission of the Internship Program is to provide students with a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to their field of study or career interest. Students engage in career exploration and development as well as learn new skills. Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events. In addition, interns may participate in Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution.
Duration:
The program will start in June 2020. Applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule.
Note: The training is unpaid. It is offered on the basis of academic credit and/or external financial support. The selected candidates must provide proof of such a receipt.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate students (who have completed their sophomore year) working towards a degree in a relevant field (e.g. political science, international affairs, foreign policy, communication, or another related field) are encouraged to apply.
- Qualified applicants will have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: public policy, education, leadership, program management.
- English fluency is required.
- Superior writing and editing abilities.
- Strong organization and analytical skills.
- Interpersonal acumen and acute attention to detail.
Learning Objectives:
- Interns will acquire substantive professional experience while working with the staff, instructors, speakers, and participants at WashU at Brookings by providing programmatic and administrative assistance and events support.
- Interns will gain first-hand experience in public policy and leadership development by assisting in the logistical planning and implementation of educational programs for a variety of audiences including government, non-profit, and private sector. Tasks may include but are not limited to; coordination of production and copyediting of course materials, event logistics, provide support to faculty and participants to resolve all issues related to program delivery, and database management.
- Interns will acquire experience in outreach and marketing by assisting with the development and execution of social media, newsletters, and other networking vehicles such as LinkedIn.
- Interns will have the opportunity to attend in-house WashU at Brookings professional development training.
