Opportunity description

Microchip Technology Inc is offering an internship for Masters of Engineering students in Germany in Electric Power. The trainee will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing an ultra-high switching frequency PWM control buck converter for an automotive, point of load application (150mA) over a period of 6 months.

Thesis Description:

The main tasks covered by this master thesis are as follows:

  • Research literature and analyze state-of-the-art constant switching frequency architectures.
  • Develop a new architecture fitting for ultra-high switching frequency PWM control of DC-DC converter. As an example, in this thesis, a step-down converter will be used for demonstration purposes. The current starved delay line-based architecture has been identified as one potential architecture to be used.
  • Modeling and analyzing the ultra-high switching frequency step-down converter in SIMPLIS, including stability analysis over operation corner conditions and identification of critical components specification boundaries.
  • Transistor level design of critical component(s) in Cadence Virtuoso (optional).
  • Complete a written report.

Eligibility criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or some related field.
  • Basic understanding of switch-mode power supply (SMPS) topologies and control methods.
  • Basic knowledge of feedback and control theory.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with modeling in SIMPLIS and design in Cadence Virtuoso.
