Opportunity description

Walt Disney offers an internship at KGO-TV, an ABC owned television station (OTVS), with the opportunity to observe and participate in the daily work and operations of a major market television station. This internship will take place in California, USA.

Duration and Working Hours:

  • The approximate dates of this internship are January 2020 through May 2020.
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time hours (approximately 40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Enrolled in an undergraduate program at a college/university taking at least one class in the semester prior to participation in the internship program, or recently graduated within six months at time of application, with major or previous coursework in Broadcast Journalism, Communications or related major. And preferably have taken courses in producing/writing/editing.
  2. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  3. At least 18 years of age.
  4. Must not have completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
  5. Experience with MS Office.
  6. Prior newsroom internship.
  7. Strong, ongoing knowledge of hard news/current events.
  8. Unrestricted work authorization in the USA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience (academic or internship) in journalism (print and/or broadcast); television, news, and new media production; and/or television news script writing.
  2. Thorough knowledge or experience using social media.
  3. Knowledge of news software such as Dalet.

Duties:

  1. Attend production meetings.
  2. Assist the assignment desk.
  3. Answer phones and conduct beat checks.
  4. View and log tapes.
  5. Transcribe interviews.
  6. Research news topics (including online/social media news research).
  7. Aid in the planning of news series.
  8. Observe editors, writers, producers, directors, and technical crews.
  9. Travel with reporters and field crews for stories and live remotes on occasion.

Funding:

Interns have to provide their own relocation, housing, and transportation, as the internship program doesn't cover these expenses.
