Opportunity description

Facebook is offering a full-time job opportunity as a Policy Associate for Human Rights to join the team in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and London, United Kingdom for 2021. The candidate to fill a hybrid role between Human Rights Public Policy and Policy Programs who can build partnerships with the full complement of key stakeholders, including civil society, academics, government and other social impact stakeholders to mitigate human rights risk across the MENA region, with a focus on North Africa. You should have a clear understanding of relevant human rights issues, the policy challenges Facebook faces across the region related to human rights, ambitious and creative ideas about how to address them, and the ability to fearlessly execute. 

Duties & responsibilities

  1. Identify, create and implement proactive strategies with key cross functional teams to address on and off platform human rights risk and create opportunities in addressing these strategies.
  2. Work closely with MENA public policy team & MENA Human Rights Manager on key escalations across MENA.
  3. Map key human rights organisations & networks working in the digital space in MENA.
  4. Work with MENA public policy and functional leads to create and implement engagement strategies in key at risk countries in MENA (including events, partnerships, etc.).
  5. Work in partnership with the wider AMET Public Policy team on the strategy for building relationships with civil society, academics, human rights defenders.
  6. Work closely with MENA Human Rights Manager to build and manage meaningful partnerships with key human rights organisations and networks across the region.
  7. Develop key work streams and demonstrate excellent project management skills.
  8. Apply strategic thinking to the plan and implementation of projects.
  9. Work closely with a variety of cross functional teams to deliver on objectives.
  10. Build coalitions to help advance and support key policy issues across human rights considerations.
  11. Support the MENA Policy Programs lead in executing digital literacy programs across the MENA region.
  12. Help to identify local partners who we can work with to execute programs.
  13. Align with SSA Digital Literacy lead to develop an AMET-wide approach to Digital Literacy programs, from implementation to impact measurement.
  14. Help to manage program output from partners once rolled out.
  15. Capture key insights from program evaluation reports to help inform future digital literacy engagement.
  16. Assist in scoping opportunities to scale programs in new countries post initial launch.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Experience working with civil society and political systems/institutions in Africa, the Middle East or Turkey, particularly those related to human rights, free expression, social justice, women's rights, health access, LGBTQIA rights, peace building.
  2. Extremely strong experience designing and being responsible for implementing strategy through others, especially through cross-functional teams.
  3. Impeccable integrity, passion for human rights and social impact, sound judgment, creativity and the demonstrated ability to think critically and challenge received wisdom.
  4. Ability to think, plan, and execute resourcefully and creatively.
  5. Passion for technology and its power to address issues related to social impact and human rights, as well as a deep understanding of the ways that technology and social media platforms operate in the region.
  6. Ability to travel frequently and extensively across the region.
  7. Passion for Facebook and its mission to make the world more open and connected.
  8. Superior written and oral communications skills.
  9. Arabic and French language proficiency a plus.
