Selection Criteria:
Your submission will be rated on the following criteria.
- Design: Design scores should reflect the designer’s mastery of shape, scale, aesthetics, proportion, and functionality. Therefore, the evaluation in this category will be based on the following questions: did the designer consider how their design represents the brand, product, and even the customer? Can a person understand its purpose and value right away?
- Innovation: Innovation is a tough quality to quantify, however it may be seen as the effort put forth by a designer to apply critical thinking to the resolution of a problem. Innovation scores should reflect the designer’s use of new design methods, technologies, and approaches to solve a clear problem. Therefore, the evaluation in this category will be based on the following questions: does the designer understand the problem they were trying to solve? Did they solve it in a way that shows they thought through all of the implications of this problem? Is the problem innovative on its own? Does their solution utilize existing or future technologies?
- Sustainability: Design does not live in a vacuum, it should have a positive effect on the local environment and, ideally, the world as a whole. Sustainability scores should reflect how well the designer considered their design’s role in the Circular Design ethos. Therefore, the evaluation in this category will be based on the following question: did the designer consider how their design may impact the environment in a short and long-term way?
- Materials/Manufacturability: The evaluation in this category will be based on the following questions: How did the designer consider the materiality of their creation? Does the materiality affect how a customer interacts with it; either while using it or even recycling it? Did the designer consider how their materials or manufacturing processes play into the Circular Design process?
- Cost: A design should be practical to interact with, acquire, build, maintain, or otherwise use. Cost scores should reflect the designer’s ability to create something logical, functional, and generally aware of its cost implications. Therefore, the evaluation in this category will be based on the following question: did the designer consider the complexity, cost, or implementation of their design? Is this design for the 99% or the 1%? Can it be applied to many brands or products around the world?
