Opportunity description

The ZEF Center for Development Research, University of Bonn, Germany, invites applications from graduate students living in developing countries for the BIGS-DR doctoral program. ZEF offers scholarships in collaboration with the DAAD EPOS program for students who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in one of the following disciplines:

[1] economics
[2] social sciences and sociology
[3] political science
[4] agricultural and resource economics
[5] agronomy
[6] biology
[7] ecology
[8] forestry
[9] mathematics
[10] earth sciences.

Selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on:
[1] Academic qualification: applicants need to have an excellent master's or equivalent degree (GPA higher than 3.0 in the American system, or a grade higher than 2.0 in the German system or equivalent). Applicants who have finished a one year master's degree are also eligible under the condition that they have written a master's thesis.

[2] Innovative research ideas: applications must contain a four-page graduate research statement which describes a development problem you consider interesting and important. The statement should Include your main research questions and the proposed methods linked to them and have literature references. The selection committee will assess all research statements on the basis of originality, analytical accuracy, and relevance.

  • [3] English language proficiency: applicants should provide the score of one of the following English language tests:
    IELTS certificate (band 6)
    TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer-based, 80 internet-based)
    Other English language certificate from a language institution
    University waiver that indicates the language of instruction was in English.

[4] The applicant’s last academic degree should have been obtained less than six years prior to application. 

[5] Work experience in national or international research institutions, governments, or the private sector is preferred.

Funding:

Successful applicants benefit from DAAD grants valued at 830-1,100 euros covering health insurance, housing, food, clothes, books and entertainment. The University of Bonn raises no tuition fees. However, there is semester fee of around 290 EUR per term at the University of Bonn. Unsuccessful applicants may apply as External Doctoral Students. External students have to organize their own funds (cost of living, research expenses, etc.).

ZEF's researchers aim to find science-based solutions to development-related issues. ZEF’s research departments on Economic and Technological Change, Political and Cultural Change, and  Ecology and Natural Resources Management conduct inter- and trans-disciplinary research in, for and with emerging economies and on global issues with its collaborating research partners around the world.
