Opportunity description

VSO -an international development organisation- is offering a volunteering opportunity in Ethiopia as an Early Grades Literacy Numeracy Education Specialist. The volunteer will be responsible for enhancing children’s basic skills through delivering capacity building interventions for key institutions and supporting children from disadvantaged communities in their education.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • A recognized MA/BA level Qualification in Early Grade Literacy and Numeracy development;
  • At least five years’ experience of teaching children in early years literacy and numeracy;
  • Proven experience In teacher training;
  • Proven knowledge and experience in child-centred active learning methodologies;
  • Practical knowledge and skills in designing literacy and numeracy intervention; including the development and use of of M&E system;
  • Experience in developing curriculum/syllabus and teaching materials for teaching literacy and Numeracy;
  • Practical understanding of children and teachers’ needs in areas of basic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), mathematics and other basic subjects.

Benefits

Allowance

As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. VSO will cover your travel, vaccinations, accommodation, and medical insurance costs, along with a local living allowance which will be paid in local currency. This allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home. You will also receive some financial support to contribute to your on-going expenses at home.

VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.
