Opportunity description

The Agorize Foundation, sponsored by the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC), is offering a contest for undergraduates and university faculty about submitting ideas for a future campus that will achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Challenge Themes:

The idea of the challenge revolves around suggesting a campus project in the future that will achieve the 17 sustainable development goals. Your project should be cross-cutting and include at least 3 of the 17 Goals. It must be achievable on a university campus and fall under one of these 3 themes:

Student Life:

Issue: How will the student living standards evolve towards the SDG? Propose a project that provides one or several elements to address this issue. 

  • Life on Campus.
  • Accommodation and Eating.
  • Health.
  • Security.
  • Access to Studies.
  • Infrastructure/Shared Space Design.
  • Governance and Management.

The Campus in the City:

Issue: How will tomorrow's campus's infrastructures answer the issues of the SDG? Propose a project that provides one or several elements to address this issue.

  • New Campus Uses.
  • Governance and Management.
  • Integrating the Campus into the Town.
  • Energy Transition Issues.
  • Infrastructure/Shared Space Design.
  • Interconnected, virtual/dematerialized, and collaborative campus.

New Educational Issues:

Issue: How will future education evolve toward the SDG? Propose a project that provides one or several elements to address this issue.

  • Internationalising Higher Education.
  • Entrepreneurship and research.
  • Governance and Management.
  • Education and Research.
  • Transdisciplinarity.
  • Lifelong Learning.
  • Distance learning device.
  • The Education of the Future.
  • Knowing How to Contribute to the SDGs.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • This Challenge is open and offered solely to:
  • Any student aged eighteen (18) years and/or with full legal capacity, who is currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution during the current scholar year 2019-2020, with a student card as verification. Each student may only participate once in each Challenge. If the participant is a minor, he/she must provide this authorization signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Any Teacher/ Professor aged eighteen (18) years and/or with full legal capacity, who currently a teacher-researcher enrolled in higher university education and able to prove it by a document attesting to their teaching load at the university and/or their membership of a university laboratory. Only one participant in the Challenge per person will be allowed.
  • This Challenge is not open to employees and representatives of the Sponsor and Agorize and the members of their families.
  • This Challenge is void in countries where it is prohibited or restricted by law.

Challenge Rounds:

Round One:

  • All Round One Deliverables must be submitted before 07/02/2021. 
  • Deliverables include A 5-slide presentation of their Project, in PPT or PDF format.
  • At the end of this Round, up to 30 winning Deliverables will be pre-selected to proceed to Round Two.

Round Two:

  • All Round Two Deliverables must be submitted before 18/04/2021.
  • Round Two Deliverables include:
  • A 5-slide presentation of their Project, in PPT or PDF format.
  • A presentation video of the team and the project, in mp4 format or on a URL link.
  • 5 one-slide annexes if needed
  • At the end of this Round, up to 6 winning Deliverables will be selected to proceed to the Final Round.

Final Round:

  • Participants who have been selected to participate in the Final Round will be directly notified by email to the address provided during registration. In the event a Participant does not confirm his/her attendance at the final event, the Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify this Participant. This disqualification shall not entitle the Participant to claim any kind of compensation from the Sponsor.
  • The Final Round consists of an oral presentation of the selected projects by the Participants. Participants are not required to upload a Deliverable to the Challenge website before the Final Round.
  • However, Participants must prepare a Deliverable that meets the specifications set out which include:
  • A document describing their Project and presenting, for example, the problem it tackles, the proposed solution, its impact, and its business model. This document will be used as a presentation document during the oral presentation given by the Participants involved in the Project. 
  • At the end of the Final Round, the jury will choose the winning projects.

Prizes:

  • Grand Prize: one week of Learning Expedition all-inclusive (valid for two people on the team: flight, training, professional meetings, and accommodation) (1500 euros including VAT).
  • Second Place: one week of Learning Expedition all-inclusive (valid for two people on the team: flight, training, professional meetings, and accommodation) (1500 euros including VAT).
  • Third Place: one week of Learning Expedition all-inclusive (valid for two people on the team: flight, training, professional meetings, and accommodation) (1500 euros including VAT).

Notes:

  • No assignment or transfer of prizes is allowed by a winner. If a potential winner cannot be reached, is unable to accept the prize or any portion of the prize for any reason, the Sponsor shall have no further obligation to such potential winner.
  • In the event a Participant (a winner) cannot be reached, by email or by phone, for more than three (3) months after the first attempt to reach them was made, he/she will be deemed as having waived their right to claim the prize and will not be entitled to any prize or any kind of compensation.

Selection Criteria:

  • Originality: Does the solution address the problem and fall within the scope of the Challenge Campus 2030?
  • Relevancy: How well does the Deliverable respond to the specific need(s) set out in the Brief?
  • Feasibility: How feasible is the solution to put into practice? Does the solution make sense financially? Will the solution be sustainable over the long term?
  • Quality of presentation: does the presentation follow a logical and structured sequence without spelling mistakes and with quality arguments?
  • Transversality of the project: does the project include at least 3 sustainable development objectives? Does it integrate well the social and environmental visions of the SDGs?
  • Complementarity of the team: is the team mixed? Gender, profile, and/or nationality.
