Africa Check is delighted to announce the sixth African Fact-Checking Awards, that each year honor journalism by Africa-based media in the emerging field of fact-checking. This competition is open to journalists who published or broadcasted a report, exposing as misleading or wrong a claim on an important topic made by a public figure or institution in Africa. This year awards are exceptional, as the organizers added exciting new categories:
- Fact-check of the year by a working journalist
- Fact-check of the year by a student
- One runner-up in each of the two categories above.
Benefits
- The winner of the awards for the best fact-checking report by a working journalist will get a prize of $2,000, while the runner-up will be awarded $1,000.
- The winner of the award for the best fact-checking report by a student journalist will get a prize of $1,000, and the runner-up $500.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible, entries for this competition must be according to the following conditions:
- Be the original work of the individual or team identified in the entry form as the author.
- Have been published or broadcast for the first time by a media house based in Africa between 1 September 2018 and 30 June 2019.
- Entries can have been published or broadcasted in any language but must be presented in either English or French. If they are not originally done in English or French, a translation into English or French must be provided.
- The entrant confirms that they are the authors of the work and that in the case of any dispute about this, this is entirely the entrant's responsibility.
- At the shortlisting stage, a representative of the jury may seek clarification on some points
- Entrants must agree to do media interviews and/or reports about the awards if they win
- The work may be published in print or online, broadcast on the radio or television or published in a blog. Reports published by Africa Check are not eligible for the competition.
- For the student category, the candidate must have attended a journalism school in Africa at some period between 1 September 2018 and 30 June 2019.
The entries will be judged on the following four criteria:
- The significance of a wider society of the claim investigated
- How the claim was tested against the available evidence
- How well the piece presented the evidence for and against the claim
- The impact that the publication had on public debate on the topic.
