Chevening in collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) is offering mid-career professionals the Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowship in the United Kingdom. The Chevening OCIS Fellowship is aimed at academics who are dedicated to the promotion of academic activities which encourage a more informed understanding of the culture and civilization of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies. The fellowship offers financial support for scholars to undertake a period of independent, self-driven research at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies in central southern England. The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is a Recognized Independent Center of the University of Oxford, that encourages a better understanding of the culture and civilization of Islam, and of all aspects of contemporary Muslim societies in their global context. The fellowship starts in October 2019 for a six-month period of independent, self-driven research at OCIS. Fellows will need to develop their own research-project prior to arriving in the UK.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for a Chevening OCIS Fellowship, you must:
[1] Be a citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, or Tunisia. Having the intention of returning to your home country at the end of the period of the fellowship.
[2] Demonstrate the potential to rise to a position of leadership and influence.
[3] Demonstrate the personal, intellectual and interpersonal attributes reflecting this potential.
[4] Hold a postgraduate level qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area) at the time of application.
[5] Have significant professional and/or academic research experience.
[6] Provide evidence of meeting at least the minimum English language abilities for Chevening Awards.
[7] Not hold dual nationality where one nationality is British.
Financing and Benefits:
The successful applicant will receive the OCIS fellowship that offers the following:
[1] Six-month period of research at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
[2] Living expenses for the duration of the fellowship.
[3] Return economy airfare from their home country to the UK.
[4] Allowance package for research-related activities.
Fellows will undertake a period of self-directed research focussing on their own project on the culture and civilization of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies in a global context.
Fellows will benefit from meeting a multi-disciplinary group of scholars focusing on the Islamic world, and have the opportunity to develop contacts with relevant individuals, discuss issues relating to the Islamic world and history.
