Opportunity description

Ourfood.world is offering the International Foodicons Challenge for designers all over the world. This challenge is a series of five monthly challenges for designers to develop a shared, open-source, and royalty-free iconographic language of food to be unveiled at the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.

About the Challenge:-

  • The Foodicons Challenge will develop a cooperatively-built visual language for over 500 core concepts to explain Ourfood.world’s food system. Final selections will be publicly released at the UN Food Systems Summit in 2021, then posted permanently on The Noun Project as a free resource for all to use.
  • The icon set will provide food system professionals with an effective way to communicate with colleagues, organizations, and the public. The goal is to not only to provide people with greater food literacy, but also make the food system more transparent.

Eligibility and Conditions:-

  • Entrants must be at least 18 years of age on the date the competition closes (February 14, 2020)

  • Employees of The Lexicon, their immediate families (parent, child, sibling, spouse), and persons living in the same households of such individuals (whether related or not) are not eligible to participate in the Foodicons Challenge.

  • All submissions must be the entrant’s original work. Submissions must not infringe upon the trademark, copyright, moral rights, intellectual rights, or rights of privacy of any entity or person.

  • Entrants also agree that the entry may, at Foodicons.org‘s sole discretion, be posted online at the contest website and/or any other website as determined by Foodicons.org, for visitors to the website(s) to view, download, and use as they see fit.

Timeline:-

  • Promotion and Sign-Up (Starting Dec 1): The FoodIcons “Challenge 1: Food Foundations” will launch on December 1.

  • Sketch Round(Dec 20/Jan 3): The Sketch Round for designers will run for two weeks, from December 20 until January 3, during which time Judges will be onboarded. Following January 3, judges will be provided a packet with a Google Slide Deck (The Foodicons Challenge Workbook) for each term in the round. These decks will have 8-10 icons for the specific term.

  • Critique 1 (Jan 6/Jan 13): January 6, Judges will review and provide feedback on the initial icon sketches directly on the Foodicons Challenge Workbook. This feedback will be provided to the designers, who will enter the first two-week-long Design Round.

  • Design Round (Jan 14/Jan 28): Two more weeks will be allocated for designers to contribute their work during the Design Round.

  • Critique 2 (Jan 31/Feb 7): Judges will review and provide feedback on the draft designs directly on the Foodicons Challenge Workbook. This feedback will be provided to the designers, who will enter the final Refinement Round.

  • Refinement Round (Feb 8/Feb 14): Designers will upload their final art in the Foodicons Challenge Workbook and wait for final approval.

  • Final Approval (Feb 17/Feb 20):  Judges will evaluate the final designs to approve them for submission to the Noun Project archive for the project. There may be more than one final design for a particular term, in which case judges will vote on which is more effective.
