Translation Competition and a Chance to Win EGP 100,000 at the National Center for Translation

Believing in the importance of the translator, and the enlightening role he plays in spreading knowledge and upgrading culture, the National Center for Translation announces the opening of its prize for translated works into Arabic.

Prizes:

• Refaah Al-Tahtawi Award for Translation: One hundred thousand pounds reward, a trophy, and a certificate of appreciation.
• Youth Award for Translation: Twenty-five thousand pounds reward, a trophy, and a certificate of appreciation.
• Scientific Translation Award (in the fields of natural sciences of all kinds): Fifty thousand pounds reward, trophy, and a certificate of appreciation.

Works submitted by individuals, as well as from scientific and cultural institutions, translators and publishers are accepted, bearing in mind that the prize value is granted in full to the translator.

Terms and Conditions:

• The work should be translated and published in one of the Egyptian or Arabic publishing companies.
• The translated work must have intellectual property rights.
• The translation must be from the original language.
• The first edition of the translated work must have been issued within the previous three years from the application date.
• The applicant chooses one of the three prizes to apply for, and with one work only.
• It is not permissible to submit works that have previously won prizes in translation, or submitted for an award from another party at the same time.
• The age of the youth prize applicant at the time of applying for the award should not exceed 40 years.
• Those who won the prize before can't apply again, but they can apply again after five years.
• It is not permissible to submit a work for which there is a reviewer for translation regarding the Rafaat Al-Tahtawi Award.

About National Center for Translation:

The National Center for Translation is a not-for-profit cultural foundation established in 2006 thanks to the efforts of Prof. Dr. Jaber Asfour as an extension of the National Translation Project, which started its activity in 1996 as a committee of the Supreme Council of Culture. And based on Republican Decision No. (381) of 2006 as a cultural body supervised by an 18-member Board of Trustees headed by the Minister of Culture, that held a meeting every two years to assess the center’s performance and the effectiveness of its cultural role. The center works on translating, transferring and publishing books from its original language to the Arabic language, which means building bridges of cooperation and understanding between peoples and based on the positive role that translation plays in developing culture and opening up to world cultures. During its working years, the National Center for Translation issued more than 3,000 titles translated from 35 international languages. The center receives translation suggestions from a variety of sources such as translators, senior thinkers and those concerned with cultural affairs, foreign publishing companies, and cultural centers, and they are classified according to the field of study and specialized committees are formed to choose the first books with translation.
