Opportunity description

Columbia Organization of Rising Entrepreneurs (CORE) offers a workshop of five days for high school students about Social Entrepreneurship. CORE seeks to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs by working with Columbia Global Centers | Amman, Jordan to introduce high school students to social entrepreneurship and design thinking. This workshop will be held as part of the Amman Center's Soraya Salti Youth for Youth Series.

What will participants do?

Participants will examine the business models of startups such as Uncharted Power, FEED Project, and other ventures by Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs, within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. By the end of the workshop, students will have produced, polished and presented viable pitches that address social issues through entrepreneurial design thinking.

This workshop will give students the opportunity to:

  1. Adopt an entrepreneurial problem solving and design thinking to yield social impact
  2. Become familiar with the commonly used business model canvas and funding terms
  3. Speak to founders in Europe and the United States about global entrepreneurship
  4. Complete pitch decks and present their ideas to a greater audience
  5. Become a part of a global network of high school students interested in social entrepreneurship

The workshop will be led by:

  1. Heejin (Irene) Koo is a student at Columbia College majoring in economics and currently serves as the president of CORE. As part of CORE, Irene has led tech treks, organized faculty dinners, and spearheaded the fall high school social entrepreneurship conference and six-week course in partnership with the Double Discovery Center at Columbia College. On campus, she is also the advisory board director of One for the World and conducts research with the Earth Institute.
  2. Anna Makowski is studying political science and human rights at Columbia University. She currently serves on the executive board of both Columbia’s Organization of Rising Entrepreneurs (CORE) and the Political Science Students Association. At CORE, Anna works on Global Tech Treks, Women at CORE, Enterprises and fashion initiatives. She views entrepreneurship as a means to act upon curiosity and materialize global initiative. Anna also serves as a student ambassador for Operation Smile, a non-profit medical organization working towards addressing various cleft and facial deformities.
