Opportunity description

The International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS is inviting people all over the world to participate in the Terra 2021 Program that will be held in the USA. The four-day program will include presentations, posters and videos / digital media that reflect the latest research and best practice in the study and conservation of earthen heritage around the world. The program will include sessions presenting technical information, management issues, methodology, advances in research, case studies and guidelines for best practice.

Program Activities:

The program includes Optional pre-congress workshops and post-congress tours that will be organized at an additional cost to the congress registration:

  • Pre-congress workshop: Optional pre-congress workshops will be one to three days depending on the nature of the topics covered. They will provide an opportunity for registered participants to acquire hands-on skills and technical training. Pre-congress workshops will be offered within the period of June 5 – 7, 2021.
  • Post-congress tours: Optional post-congress tours will be offered for participants to experience the archaeological, historic and contemporary earthen heritage in and around Santa Fe and neighboring states. Experienced guides, staff from the National Park Service and the University of New Mexico, and other professionals will lead and assist on the tours. The post-congress tours are planned for one to four days and will be offered within the period of June 12 – 15, 2021.
  • Detailed itineraries, costs, and registration information for the pre-congress workshops and the post-congress tours will be provided in the next Terra 2021 announcement, scheduled to be posted online in June 2020. Registration for the pre-congress workshops and the post-congress tours will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. An advance payment will be required.

Conditions:

  • All citizens of a foreign country who plan to participate in the Terra 2021 World Congress must first obtain a US visa. The congress organizers will provide participants coming from outside the United States with a formal letter of registration to facilitate the visa process.
  • The congress organizers are prohibited under U.S. law from transacting or dealing with persons who are subject to U.S. financial sanctions. Prospective registrants will be screened and required to certify their eligibility.
  • Limited sources of funding may be available for participants who need financial assistance to attend the congress. Participants must indicate a need for funding with their registration.

Venue and Accommodation:

  • The congress will be held at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The recently built convention facility is designed to echo the adobe structures characteristic of New Mexico and features state-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the building. 
  • The convention center is located in close proximity to numerous hotels, shops, and restaurants.
  • Three Santa Fe hotels close to the convention center will be proposed as the official congress hotels with a preferred rate in the next announcement. Other smaller or less expensive hotels will also be listed for those who prefer more independent accommodations. Participants will be responsible for making their own payments directly to all hotels.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMIS is a professional association that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world. ICOMOS is dedicated to the development of common doctrines, the evolution and circulation of knowledge, the creation of improved conservation techniques, and the promotion of cultural heritage significance. As an official advisory body to the World Heritage Committee for the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, ICOMOS evaluates nominations and advises on the state of conservation of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List.
