Abdul Hameed Shoman Children’s Literature Award with Prize Pool of 18.000 JOD

Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation is accepting entries for 16th edition of Abdul Hameed Shoman Children’s Literature Award 2022. This year’s theme is drawing inspiration from popular tales in Arab culture, and entries should speak to 9-12 age group.

As writers could research sources of these tales, and draws inspiration from the plots, twists and turns, and protagonists, to construct a new story suitable for 21st century kids. This is attainable through adaptation to new era circumstances, awareness level, problems, issues, and interests. In order to combine the heritage and the postmodern world through the narrative text, and it’s required to send the text of the original story along with the submission.

Award categories:

1. Short story
2. Poetry
3. Novel
4. Play

The Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation grants each winner a certificate in their name according to the literary field, in addition to plaque with award name and logo of the Foundation and a financial reward of 18000 Jordanian dinars distributed as follow:

• First place: 10.000 Jordanian dinars
• Second place: 5000 Jordanian dinars
• Third place: 3000 Jordanian dinars

After reviewing the general conditions for applying in the award guide, applying conditions are as follows:

• Text should have chapters, and written in plain, easy to understand Arabic.
• Text should be inspired by spoken and written Arab culture.
• Language used in writing text should be appropriate for targeted age group.
• Speak to 9-12 y age group.
• Text ranges from 1500 - 2500 words.
• Only one text per writer will be accepted.
• Attaching the original text is mandatory.
• Applications are accepted from December 15, 2021 till the end of April 2022.

Evaluation Criteria:

Entries evaluation shall be undertaken by a committee formed by the scientific institution of the award from theme specialists based on set rules. As for the evaluation criteria:

1. Innovation in drawing inspiration.
2. Language and style
3. Content and ideas
4. Innovation and creativity
5. Originality of the story inspired from the original text.

The following required attachments should be uploaded:

• ID or passport copy.
• cv summary.
• Text submitted meeting these requirements:
• Word document and with Arial font and size of 14.
• Writer’s name should never put his/her name on e-copy.
• A signed copy of the acknowledgment.
