Opportunity description
Nesta Challenges announces the participation opportunity in a competition; Accelerating Growth that is the first strand of the Afri-Plastics Challenge. It aims to seek small and medium-sized enterprises that have a proof of concept and the ability to scale nationally or regionally to reach a high target number of people, particularly engaging women and girls. As well as scale existing solutions that improve plastic waste management in a socially and environmentally responsible way, to reduce the presence of plastic litter across Sub Saharan Africa.

- Support with seed funding and expert support to develop the idea further to demonstrate its ability to solve the problem at hand.
- The first or best solution wins the overall prize.
Eligibility criteria
You must follow the following criteria:
- Applicants must be delivering an existing solution that tackles the reduction of plastic pollution.
- You must deal with at least ten tonnes of plastic waste per month and no more than a maximum threshold of 200 tonnes of plastic waste per month at the time of application.
- Delivery of solutions must be in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Applicants must be formally constituted and operating in Sub-Saharan Africa as either a registered business or non-governmental organization (NGO).
- Applicants can be a single entity, an African partnership, or an international partnership.
- You can submit up to three ideas and be named as a partner on more than one entry.
- Each idea must be submitted separately and need to be different from the other ideas you have already submitted.
- For partnership applications, the nominated lead applicant must be operating in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Applicants must own or have permission to use intellectual property.

Your work will be judged based on the following criteria:
- Scale:
- Does the solution demonstrate the potential to be replicated in or adapted to other contexts?
- Empowerment of women and girls:
- Does the solution contribute directly to the empowerment of women and girls?
- Social impact:
- Does the solution make a positive and meaningful difference to society?
- Environmental impact:
- Does the solution make a positive impact on the environment?
- Capability:
- Does the solution have a team behind it with the relevant track record, skills, experience, and resources to achieve success?
