Partially Funded Residency Program for Artists in Japan from Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS)

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS), operated by a division of The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, offers artist residence programs for international creators working in various creative fields to stay, engage in the creation, and conduct research activities in Tokyo. It also provides creators with the opportunities to exchange creative ideas and to present outcomes of their residency at TOKAS-organized events, such as the open studio. It provides financial support to allow curators to develop and present their research and ideas.

• Living space (single room), Each accommodation is equipped with a kitchen, toilet, bath, furniture (bed, desk, chairs, etc.), refrigerator, air-conditioner, tableware, towels, sets of linen, Wifi internet connection
• Fee for research/project.
• A round-trip economy-class air ticket between the nearest airport from the place of residence and Tokyo (either Narita or Haneda Airport).

• This program is aimed at those curators who are willing to conduct new research in Tokyo and practice in any of the following cultural/ artistic fields: curation, art criticism, and cultural research.
• You must reside outside of Japan.
• You must have 3 years or more of experience in your specialized area of expertise.
• You must have sufficient ability to communicate in English with other residing creators and TOKAS staff for mutual understanding.
• Be independent and capable of working and living on your own.
• Able to stay consecutively at TOKAS Residency during the proposed residency period.
• Do not carry out any commercial or profitable activities throughout the residency period.
• Do not conduct any activities that would make big noise or vibration in TOKAS Residency.

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) is an arts center dedicated to the creation and promotion of contemporary artistic expression from Tokyo and supports a wide spectrum of artistic activities. Established in 2001 as Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS), an initiative for the support and nurturing of young artists, it was renamed Tokyo Arts and Space in 2017.
