Opportunity description
Qatar Museums Foundation announces an art exhibition entitled “Distilled Lessons on Abstraction in Arab Modernism in Qatar,” which addresses the abstract experiments that distinguish Arab Modernism from its counterparts around the world. Abstraction is an Arabic term that refers to revelation and clarification. Contemporary artists from West Asia and North Africa have realized The inherent abstraction of the Arabic language, as it presented itself as a system of geometric forms that transcended the common visual structure found in other parts of the world. Likewise, the interest in abstraction by artists, whether Arab or otherwise, in other places, inadvertently drew their attention to What is known as Islamic art, which prompted them to incorporate traditional aesthetics into their contemporary production.
Benefits
- This exhibition examines how specific experiments in abstraction, particularly those inspired by the rich heritage of the Arab-Islamic world, produce works that distinguish Arab modernism from their counterparts around the world.
- The exhibition highlights the ways in which regional artists derived new ideas, visual elements and techniques from calligraphy and ornamental styles in particular, and thus created a unique approach to abstraction.
- The exhibition includes works drawn from Mathaf's collection, and raises critical questions about traditional understandings of abstraction. Regardless of objection to its source, abstraction is not viewed here as an end in itself, nor through the lens of simplification or reductionism, but rather as a means of tapping into unrealized potential and discovering new expressive possibilities within the familiar. In other words, abstraction can be viewed as a journey of intellectual research and a way to reach the targeted lessons.
