Opportunity description

Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) offers a grant opportunity for early career researchers and global health professionals based anywhere in the world to deliver a project over one year. These grants represent an exciting and important opportunity for researchers who have not had research funding in their own name before. The projects can be on any topic related to tropical medicine and global health, from across the research spectrum of lab, translation, implementation, and policy.

  • a grant of up to £5,000.

Eligibility criteria

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Awardees should not have received research funding in their own name before.
  • Have a clear research plan for which you are seeking support.
  • Ideally be employed by, or affiliated to an organization, though will consider applications from those not affiliated or employed. 
  • Should awardees seek to transfer to another institution during an award, written permission is required from RSTMH and this may be granted only in exceptional circumstances.
  • Hold a registered bank account that accepts GBP. 
  • Be an RSTMH member. 
  • Applications can be submitted from non-members but, if successful, awardees must join RSTMH before funding will be supplied.
  • Have not received an RSTMH grant before.
  • Not be an RSTMH global assessor in the same year.
  • Not be a named supervisor or referee on an RSTMH grant application in the same year.
  • Applicants are encouraged to include costs that would enable their projects to maximize diversity and inclusion and community participation.
  • You should be to be able to:
  • Carry out research under supervision.
  • Have the ambition to develop knowledge of research methodologies and discipline.
  • Have demonstrated a good understanding of a field of study.
  • Produce data under supervision.
  • Use critical analysis, evaluation and be able to synthesize new and complex ideas.

Timeline:

  • Open for applications: 1 February 2022.
  • Deadline for applications: 29 April 2022.
  • Funding payments made: September 2022.
  • Projects start By December 2022.
  • Projects finish By December 2023.
  • Reports are due By March 2024.

Your application is evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Early career status.
  • Importance of the proposed research.
  • Quality of the project design and methodology.
  • Feasibility of the project.
  • Impact of your research project.
  • Environment, mentoring, support.
  • Value for money.
