Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) is calling students from all over the world to the opportunity to get one of the FMI PhD scholarships in Switzerland. The FMI runs both a PhD program and an MD-PhD program which offer students the opportunity to carry out cutting-edge biomedical research in a stimulating, highly international, and collaborative atmosphere.

Eligibility criteria
You must meet the following criteria:
- The FMI PhD program:
- Applicants must hold, or anticipate receiving before enrollment, a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent program in their home country (MSc., Diploma, DEA, etc.).
- A course of study typically lasts four to five years.
- The FMI MD-PhD program:
- Applicants must hold, or anticipate to receive before their enrollment, a university degree that would qualify them to enter formal clinical training/residency (e.g., a diploma in medicine).
- Have some laboratory research experience and have done an experimental Master/Diploma thesis, which must be approved by the University of Basel.
- A course of study typically lasts four years.
Please note: There are two rounds of applications per year, with application deadlines in May and November.

The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI), based in Basel, Switzerland, is a world-class biomedical research institute with a twofold mission – understanding the molecular mechanisms of health and disease, and training young scientists. With an international staff of about 340, and 21 research groups, the FMI’s main areas of focus are neurobiology, quantitative biology, and epigenetics. Named after Friedrich Miescher, the Basel biochemist who discovered nucleic acids, the FMI is affiliated with the University of Basel and the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. It is currently led by Professor Dirk Schübeler. Established in 1970, the FMI has been playing a leading role in biomedical research for over half a century.
