Opportunity description

The University of Gondar announces the MasterCard Foundation Alumni Program for academically gifted youth who are deprived of access to opportunities and resources in Ethiopia. This scholarship targets academically gifted young people from five countries in East Africa: Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti and South Sudan. The program is designed to help participants gain the leadership and practical skills needed to effectively influence global, regional, national and local social and economic development trends.

Benefits

Accommodation for participants will include:

  • Cafeteria and lounges: The University of Gondar has lounges and cafeterias for students on its five campuses. 
  • Cafeterias are open three times a day to serve food to students, and most lounges are open 18 hours a day to serve food and beverages to students and staff.
  • Banking: The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has a full-service branch on the Tewodros Campus as well as several ATMs.
  • Many Libraries: The university has nine libraries that provide a wide range of services, including computer laboratories, digital resources, and training and support for students with disabilities.
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT) facilities: The university provides technology support through a main office on the Atsi Tewodros campus and through offices in all faculties.
  • There are several computer labs on campus, and students can access free internet services through a username and password.
  • Guidance and counseling services: The university provides guidance and counseling services to all students, in addition to many community support services.
  • Center for Disability Studies: The Center for Disability Studies sponsors and coordinates research and services for students with disabilities and is affiliated with the Community Rehabilitation Center.
  • Community Rehabilitation Center: The Community Rehabilitation Center works to support the full integration of people with disabilities into their communities.
  • Campus Security: The university's campus security team works to keep all staff, faculty, and students safe while they are at the university.
  • Many recreational facilities.
  • Numerous sports and fitness facilities: The university's sports and fitness complex at CMHS is currently nearing completion, but a football field and running track are currently fully operational.
  • Many churches and mosques are located near the university.
  • Health facilities at the university hospital: The university has a number of treatment centers, including an eye treatment center and psychological support groups.
  • Many clubs and associations.

Eligibility criteria

  • This scholarship targets:
    • Applicants from Somalia, Eritrea, South Sudan and Djibouti who intend to be full-time students at the University of Gondar.
    • Applicants with a first university degree from an accredited university.
    • Academically gifted people who are disadvantaged based on criteria of disability and socioeconomic status and who are not engaged in work at all or who are engaged in work but can't cover the expenses of their studies.
  • You must have:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to the proposed graduate program from an accredited university using the English language in the past five years with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) upon graduation.
    • Young people with disabilities.
    • Female applicants who are experiencing financial difficulties to finance their university and postgraduate education.
    • Obtained a passing score in the Graduate Admissions Test (GAT) administered by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education.
