Opportunity description

NASA is inviting all creative programmers all over the world to participate in the International NASA Space Apps Challenge. Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has engaged 150,000+ people from 150+ countries in using NASA’s open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space. To mark the tenth annual Space Apps, NASA is collaborating with nine international space agency partners to bring the largest annual global hackathon in the world to even more communities.

About the Challenge:-

  • The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps) is an international hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and others in cities around the world, where teams engage the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.
  • For one weekend each October, participants from around the world come together over a 48-hour period to solve challenges submitted by NASA personnel. After the hackathon, project submissions are judged by space agency experts and winners are selected for one of 10 Global Awards.
  • Space Apps introduces problem-solvers worldwide to NASA’s free and open data. By using NASA data to solve each year’s challenges, Space Apps teams learn about NASA’s data, and share in the creation and application of the knowledge that results.
  • Space Apps Challenge also inspires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. The challenge’s mission is to leverage this interest to encourage the growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, storytellers, and engineers.
  • You can find the available challenges from here.

Benefits

  • Space Apps winners will be featured on the Space Apps website and social media, and they will receive an invitation to present their projects to NASA personnel (and space agency partners, if applicable).
  • Once travel is deemed safe, winning teams will receive an invitation to the Winners Trip, which could potentially include viewing a spacecraft launch at a NASA facility.
  • Each winning team member will be allowed to invite a guest of their choice. The Local Lead associated with each winning team, and a guest of their choice, will also receive an invitation. ALL invited guests will be responsible for arranging and financing their own travel, visas, meals, incidental expenses, and accommodation.
  • Regardless of whether your team wins an award, participants who are on a registered team and submit a project by the end of the hackathon will receive a certificate recognizing their participation.

Eligibility criteria

  • The Space Apps Challenge is for everyone. This includes those who have never “hacked’ before. All passionate problem solvers are encouraged to join - students, experts, engineers, makers, artists, and storytellers. While some of the challenges are technical, others ask you to use your artistic skills, your business acumen, and your historical imaginations. In other words, you do not need to be a coder or data expert to be part of Space Apps. In fact, the most diverse teams are often the most successful.
  • Participants who are under the age of 18 are required to be registered for the event by a parent or legal guardian and must be accompanied during the event at all times by a parent or legal guardian.
  • The common thread among Space Apps participants is that you are interested in space science and exploration, that you are creative, and that you want to solve problems.
  • An individual is allowed to work and submit a project independently. However, it is preferrable that attendees be part of a team.
  • The sweet spot for teams is typically 4 to 5 people. The limit for a team is 6 people.
