Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers Program offers a Volunteer opportunity as a radio producer in South Sudan. The Communications and Public Information Section (CPIS)/Radio Unit will operate a radio station with the mission of disseminating information of interest and promoting awareness of the missions to a diverse audience across the country and coordinating with other units, UN agencies, NGOs, and government agencies to tell the mission's messages.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • Work with a team of local staff who design and produce daily radio programs.
  • Provide objective and correct information regarding the role of the United Nations to the general public and the political, social, and economic situation in South Sudan.
  • Provide a platform for discussion within the community about peace and the future of South Sudan.
  • Work with a team of journalists to support the design and development of radio news, programs, and other content to address various issues including protection of civilians, human rights, humanitarian aid, youth, education, health, etc.
  • Examine all information used for accuracy and reliability, in addition to verifying information sources and references, and ensuring that all produced content complies with the highest possible standards of integrity, impartiality, objectivity, and clarity.
  • Liaise with all relevant mission departments, UN agencies, government agencies, civil society organizations, etc., to identify priority topics for radio broadcasts and identify target groups for such programs, liaise with local media, local government bodies, and academics.
  • Coverage of mission-related activities, as well as important political, social, and cultural events in the country.
  • Adherence to editorial policies and all aspects of radio program production, including public service announcements, news stories, features, and documentaries for local, regional, and international use.
  • Create an appropriate national, regional, and international distribution system for the mission's broadcast and digital multimedia products.
  • Incorporating new media (websites, social media, and other tools) into broadcast productions.
  • Develop and maintain positive, constructive, and harmonious working relationships with the radio and digital/social media sector in the host country, including managing production and broadcast partnerships and capacity-building programs when needed.
  • Planned, supported, organize and coordinate the operational activities of the radio unit in relation to the overall objective of the radio strategy, under the direct supervision of the Head of Programs.
  • Assist with all aspects of multimedia production including public service announcements, news stories, features, and documentaries for local, regional, and international use.
  • Ensure that the radio station integrates and utilizes digital media platforms and opportunities, including links to key digital platforms and tools at United Nations Headquarters.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:

  • You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
  • You must be a national of any country other than the country of appointment.
  • 5 years of experience in journalism as a radio producer or presenter.
  • Practical experience in producing news and current affairs content for daily programs.
  • Computer skills, which include the ability to work on PowerPoint, various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.), and other IT applications and office technology equipment.
  • Strong and proven knowledge of design software, which includes InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and the ability to operate digital recording equipment.
  • Paying attention to the areas of humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, and volunteer work as a mechanism for sustainable development.
  • Experience in management, business administration, and communications.
  • Driving license for cars with manual transmission.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism, mass communication, media, public relations, graphic design, website management, broadcasting, or any related discipline.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in work.
  • Creativity skills.
