UNV offers a volunteer opportunity and announces its need to collaborate with 4 online volunteers with GIS and remote sensing analysis backgrounds to perform GIS and remote sensing analysis to assess environmental changes in Lababia Village over the past decades. The results will inform a journal publication to disseminate methods and findings to the scientific community. This advances knowledge on mangrove ecosystems and supports evidence-based conservation programs.
Duties & responsibilities
The Online Volunteers will be assigned with the following tasks:
- Identify and acquire relevant satellite imagery over Lababia Village from the past 3-4 decades.
- Preprocess and normalize multi-temporal satellite data.
- Develop land cover classification methodology optimized for detailed mangrove mapping.
- Classify land cover types from multi-date imagery and analyze changes over time.
- Validate mangrove cover changes through ground-truthing and local ecological knowledge.
- Relate land cover and mangrove changes to environmental drivers and impacts.
- Synthesize analysis into a manuscript for peer-reviewed journal publication
The tasks will be divided into:
- Online Volunteer 1: Gather and preprocess satellite data.
- Online Volunteer 2: Develop classification methodology and analyze land cover changes.
- Online Volunteer 3: Map and validate mangrove cover changes.
- Online Volunteer 4: Synthesize analysis into journal manuscript.
Eligibility criteria
You must have:
- Degree in GIS, environmental science, or a related field.
- Remote sensing analysis.
- Land cover classification.
- Mangrove mapping.
- Fluent in English.
- Technical writing for scientific publication.
- Ability to work 11 - 15 hours per week.
