The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University invites applications for the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award, to be awarded in Spring 2023 to support the research and writing of an article. It is a grant of $12,500 to support the work of a promising early-career nonfiction writer on a story that uncovers truths about the human condition.

If you are among the winners, you will have:
- Main Prize
- $6,000 upon announcement of the winning proposal.
- $3,000 upon evidence of substantial progress (usually a first draft).
- $3,500 upon completion and acceptance by the Award committee.
- A Runner-Up: $4,000.
Please note:
- The winner will normally receive visiting scholar privileges at NYU, including library access.
- The initial monetary prizes will be provided by check within eight weeks of being awarded.

Eligibility criteria
You should follow the following criteria:
- The Competition is open to anyone aged 21 and older.
- The Institute encourages applications from early-career, nonfiction writers.
- Not eligible for the Competition are:
- NYU Affiliates and their immediate families.
- NYU graduates with degrees dated 2019 and after.
- Journalists holding staff positions at established media outlets.
- Applicants may only apply once to the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award in a single year.
- An acceptable work in prose, would be expected to probe a subject in depth (4,000 to 6,000 words), bringing new understanding to an important public issue.
- The completed project must be delivered no later than December 31, 2023.
- The Institute expects the completed work to appear in an English-language publication of a strong reputation.
- Finalists may be asked to interview in person or by Skype.
Please note: The award will not fund proposals to report on armed conflicts, nor projects that are mainly investigatory.
