Opportunity description

Bridport Foundation announces its online short story competition, which will allow winners to win £5,000.

Benefits

  • The first-place winner will receive:
    • £5,000.
    • The winning story will be published in the competition publications.
    • Many opportunities to share his story.
    • An invitation to attend the awards ceremony where s/he will receive many comments to develop his/her skills from the jury and competition partners.
    • The opportunity to join the Bridport Award community.
  • The second-place winner will receive:
    • £1000.
    • His/her winning story will be published in the competition publications, which will give him/her access to many other opportunities.
  • The third-place winner will receive:
    • £500.
    • His/her winning story will be published in the competition publications, which will give him/her access to many other opportunities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Writers of any nationality who write in English and are 16 years or older can apply for this competition.
  • Participated works must be entirely the participant's own.
  • Participating works must not have been previously published on any website, blog, or online forum or have won any competition.
  • Entries that qualified for the finals in one of the other competitions, but did not win any prize in it, can apply for this competition.
  • Participation in this Contest is permitted concurrently with other Contests but your entry will be disqualified if any of the other Contests are won, published, or scheduled to be published in the future, before the prize delivery date.
  • Your participation in the competition means that you accept all its rules and failure to adhere to any of them may result in the disqualification of your participating work.
  • All entries will be judged anonymously, so please do not include your name, address, phone number, email, website, or Twitter page in the entry file or the file name.
  • Entries will be disqualified if they are untitled or exceed the word limit.
  • Contributions can be on any topic and in any style or form, but it is preferable not to participate with stories for children.
  • You can participate with any number of short stories, but please make sure to submit the correct version of your work before uploading it, as you will not be able to correct errors later.
  • You can withdraw your entry if you find that you have submitted the wrong version or made a mistake and resubmit the corrected version, but you will need to pay an additional fee in that case.
  • The short story must not exceed 5,000 words without the title.
  • Please add the word count at the top right of the first page.
  • You can use any type of font provided that it is 12 points in size.
  • Please number the pages down the middle of the page.
  • Save the file as a Microsoft Word document – .doc or .docx. .rtf, .pdf, or .txt.
  • The size of the sent file must not exceed 2 MB.
  • The file name must be the title of the story only, written exactly as it appears in the document, for example, Pride and Prejudice.
  • The entry fee is £14 per short story.
  • The jury's decision is final and no individual correspondence will be permitted.
  • Copyright of the entry work will remain with the author, but the Bridport Prize will have the right to publish the winning short stories selected in various promotional materials.
