Opportunity description

The Wells Literature Festival announces an online writing competition for children and young people's writers, which will give winners the chance to win £750.

Benefits

  • The first place winner will receive £750.
  • The second place winner will receive £300.
  • The third place winner will receive £200.
  • The contest will also offer a prize for the best local writer.

Eligibility criteria

  • All entries must be in English.
  • All entries must be the exclusive and original work of the entrant.
  • Young Poets Competition entrants must be aged between 16 and 22, and entrants to all other competitions who are under the age of 16 on the submission closing date of 30 June 2024 must have permission from the parent or guardian, to whom the prize will be paid on behalf of Participant.
  • Participants in the Young Poets Competition may submit one entry. Participants in the Open Poetry, Children's Writers and Short Story sections may submit as many entries as they wish, but each entry will require a separate registration fee.
  • Your work must not have been entered in any other competition and must not have been published anywhere at the time of submission to the competition.
  • All participants agree that once they have entered any work in the competition, it will not be subsequently entered into any other competition or published until it is determined that it has not won any other prize or after the competition winners are announced.
  • Entries exceeding the specified length will be disqualified.
  • Please save your work with the working title name, as a PDF file, as any further submissions that differ from this method will be disqualified.
  • The jury's decisions are final and non-negotiable.
  • The entry fee for each participating work is £6.
  • Participants may submit any number of entries.
  • All posts must be anonymous. Do not put your name or contact details in the file title. Your name and contact details will be recorded via the application form.
  • Place the title and page number on each page of your submitted work.
  • This competition is aimed at children aged 7 years and above, and this includes young writers.
  • Participants must select the age range for their book.
  • The competition requires the first two chapters of your submitted work or the first twenty pages, whichever is shorter, as well as a summary of up to two pages of the work.
  • Note: Selected authors may be asked to submit their full works.
