Opportunity description

The American University of Washington offers a partially funded scholarship in the USA for emerging international leaders. Those accepted for this scholarship will return to their home country after its completion to improve their communities that suffer from a lack of resources and develop services in it.

Benefits

  • The AU EGL Scholarship covers all AU billable expenses (full tuition fees, and board and lodging costs) for one international student who requires a nonimmigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States.
  • The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes and other miscellaneous expenses (about US$4,000 per year).
  • The scholarship can be renewed for four years of university study, based on your academic performance.

Eligibility criteria

  • Only one African Union Emerging Global Leaders Scholarship is available for Fall 2024. If you are not selected and wish to continue the application process, you may receive a partial scholarship.
  • Priority will be given to students:
    • Internationals who overcame various obstacles and challenges.
    • Who have diverse global and socio-economic backgrounds or belong to underrepresented groups.
    • Who possess a GPA of at least 3.8 out of 4.0 (or from the top 10% of graduates) for grades 9-12.
    • Have a clear commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and providing for the needs of people in their home country.
    • Students who possess one of the following degrees:
      • 95+ TOEFL iBT (all sub-scores must be 20 or higher).
      • Subscale scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL test (taken after May 31, 2017).
      • 7.0+ IELTS (all sub-scores must be 6.0 or above).
      • A minimum of 33 sub-scores for SAT reading
      • Minimum ACT English score of 29.
      • Minimum 65 in PTE.
      • 125+ in Duolingo (all sub-scores must be 115 or higher).
      • A minimum score of 185 on the Cambridge Assessment of English (each sub-score must be 169 or above).
      • Students who are still enrolled in high school and will graduate by June 2024.
  • Important: Students in the IB system must graduate with a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects. Students studying on the British A-Levels system must complete 3 levels with at least an A grade and finish 13 years of study before August 2024.
  • The following applicants cannot apply for this opportunity:
    • US citizens, US permanent residents, or dual US citizens.
    • Who have enrolled or have already begun post-secondary study at another university in their country of origin or in the United States.
    • Who graduated from high school before 2022.
