Opportunity description

Swansea University is offering a research scholarship for Ph.D. students in the field of Materials Engineering in the UK. Perovskite solar cells have revolutionized the field of solar energy since their brilliant debut in research work in 2012. Their remarkable light-absorbing properties make them an ideal choice for developing silicon perovskite solar cells, which aspire to capture a broader spectrum of solar energy. This exciting and challenging project focuses on building tandem perovskite and silicon solar cells on ultra-thin, flexible silicon layers. The primary applications of this technology lie in areas with specific and high power requirements, such as unmanned aerial and space vehicles (UAV). IQE plc, the world-renowned semiconductor materials company based in Cardiff, sponsored this project. This scholarship will provide you with the unique opportunity to work in the IQE manufacturing facility in Cardiff, UK where your journey will include manufacturing silicon wafers at IQE, utilizing the company's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Then you will build and accurately characterize tandem solar cells within the exceptional facilities at the newly opened Center for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM), as well as at SPECIFIC-IKC. This opportunity is looking for a talented candidate who possesses a genuine passion for solar cell research, is able to engage with multiple disciplines of materials science, manufacturing, and applied physics, and transitions seamlessly between academic and industrial/commercial environments. This scholarship is a life-transforming experience that will enhance your personal and professional growth in an innovative and supportive environment.

Benefits

  • This scholarship covers full tuition fees and an annual stipend of £18,622 for the 2023/24 academic year, and £5,000 will be awarded annually.
  • Some additional research expenses will also be provided.
  • This privileged, tax-free scholarship will last for four years.
