If you are among the winners, you will have one of the following prizes:
- First Prize:
- €2000.
- A week’s residency at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation.
- A consultation with Literary Agent Charlotte Seymour from Johnson & Alcock.
- A manuscript assessment and follow-up meeting with a literary editor from The Literary Consultancy.
- Runner-up Prizes:
- €1000 (two prizes available).
- All Shortlisted Writers:
- Will be published in a truly smashing, and launched at the Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize Salon, Madrid.
- Publication with one of its partner journals: Helter Skelter, The London Magazine, Prototype, gorse, Tenement, Kill Your Darlings, Minor Literature[s], The Second Shelf.
- Participation in Desperate Literature Prize events at Desperate Literature, Madrid and Burley Fisher, London.
- One Shortlisted Writer:
- Will be offered a two-week residency at Studio Faire, France.
- All Longlisted Writers:
- Will receive one year’s access to The Literary Consultancy’s ‘Being a Writer’ platform.
Eligibility criteria
You should follow the following criteria:
- Entrants must be individuals and not a company or organizations.
- Entrants must submit their work using their legal name, though pseudonyms are accepted for the purposes of promotion and publishing should you be shortlisted.
- Entrants must be over 18 years of age at the time of submission.
- The competition is not open to employees of Desperate Literature, of any collaborative entity, or members of the judging panel, and family members of any of the aforementioned are also not eligible.
- Submissions must be in English.
- Submissions must be made in .pdf format (carrying no mention of the author’s name) when paying for your entry.
- Submissions may include images, but the maximum file upload size per entry is 10 MB.
- Submissions must be previously unpublished works of up to 2000 words.
- Entrants may submit more than one story.
- The entry fee is set at €20 for the first piece of short fiction and €10 for every further entry with a maximum of five entries per person.
- Translations are accepted. Entrants may be the original author or the translator of the piece but must have permission to submit and the rights for both pieces.
- Prizes are not transferable.
- The week-long residency in the Civitella Ranieri Foundation must take place in either May or October of the year following the prize win.
About Desperate Literature:
Desperate Literature Short Fiction Prize aims to both celebrate the best of new short fiction and to give winners the most visibility possible for their writing. That’s why we’ve teamed up with fourteen different literary and artistic institutions to not only offer cash prizes and writing retreats but also to ensure that all shortlisted have the opportunity to be published in multiple print and online journals, have their work put in front of literary agents, and present their stories in multiple countries.
