United Nations Volunteers programme is offering a volunteer opportunity in Iraq: Associate forensic Geneticist.
Duration:
12 months (with possibility of extension)
Duties & responsibilities
- Contribute to the conduct of needs assessment of a high throughput DNA laboratory
- Focus on scientific methodologies used to establish DNA profiles from samples collected for the purpose of large-scale genetic matching of ISIL victims recovered from mass graves in Iraq.
- Advance programmes and training initiatives designed to strengthen the capacity and throughput of a national DNA laboratory used to identify persons missing as a result of ISIL crimes.
- Assist in the design and development of training materials, to strengthen national capacity
- Advise on reporting procedures, standard operating procedures and user manuals in accordance with relevant ISO standards
- Set up and maintenance of a DNA laboratory quality management system.
- Perform any other duties as required.
Eligibility criteria
Age: 27 - 80
Nationality: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.
Required experience:
- 5 years of experience in in biology, biochemistry, forensics, genetics or other related scientific fields.
- Work experience in a forensic DNA laboratory in the Middle East and North Africa region is desirable.
- Excellent oral and written skills
- Excellent reporting skills
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision
- Ability to work with tight deadlines
Languages:
- English, Level: Fluent, Required
- Arabic, Level: Fluent, Required
Required education level:
Bachelor degree or equivalent in Biology, biochemistry, forensics, genetics or other related scientific fields
