United Nations Volunteers programme is offering a volunteer opportunity in Switzerland: Assistant Human Rights Officer.
Duration:
6 months
Duties & responsibilities
- Support in the drafting of allegation letters, urgent appeals or comments on legislation.
- Support in the preparation of draft press statements on communications issues.
- Analysis of incoming information from governments, IGOs, UN agencies, as well as NGOs and individuals.
- Assist the the preparation of academic visits as well as preparation of Briefing Notes and Talking Points, organisations of meetings and seminars among others.
- Participate in the public events or the preparation of annual reports to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.
- Attend and report on public events on FORB when requested.
- Liaise with CSOs, faith based-actors and organisations.
- Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor, as appropriate.
Eligibility criteria
- Age: 18 - 26
- Nationality: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.
- Required experience:
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for this assignment though any relevant academic and/or practical experience, in particular in the area of legal or human rights affairs, would be an advantage.
- Applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations
- Area(s) of expertise: Legal affairs
- Languages:
- English, Level: Fluent, Required
- French, Level: Working knowledge, Desirable
- Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable (i.e., Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
- Required education level: Bachelor degree or equivalent in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field.
- Skills:
- Communication.

- Proven social media and communications experience.
- Knowledge of human rights issues.
- Observing deadlines and achieving results.
- Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges.
- Remains calm in stressful situations.
- Ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
