Opportunity description

The United Nations Volunteers program offers a volunteer opportunity in the field of human rights in Iraq. The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (UNAMI HRO) is an office of the United Nations Integrated Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and the Chief Human Rights Officer also represents the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Iraq. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights/UNAMI conducts its activities in accordance with the mandate granted by the United Nations Security Council at the request of the Government of Iraq.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Conduct proactive outreach to demonstrators and activists of different ages and genders; Members of organizing committees; Representatives of political and civil society organizations participating in the protests; Journalists, doctors and others actively involved either in demonstrations or in promoting the goals of protesters, especially through social media, individual meetings and focus groups.
  • Conducting monitoring and follow-up visits to various places of detention.
  • Monitor all forms of traditional and new media, including social media, in order to monitor threats made to those participating in or supporting protests.
  • Support OHCHR/UNAMI engagement with relevant UN treaty body mechanisms.
  • Participate with governmental and non-governmental organizations in submitting country and various stakeholder reports to UN human rights mechanisms and treaty bodies dealing with cases of torture and enforced disappearances.
  • Draft a variety of reports and review them when needed.
  • Ensure timely delivery of a variety of reports.
  • Briefings, analyses, and other various types of communications in accordance with established standards.
  • Perform any other duties requested of you.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:
  • High personal skills.
  • Ability to work comprehensively and collaboratively with a diverse range of partners, including civil society organizations, community members, faith-based and youth organizations, and authorities at various levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a conflict or post-conflict environment.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multicultural team of international and national staff.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Sound security awareness.
  • You must be between 27 and 80 years old.
  • 3 years of experience in human rights, international humanitarian law or any other related field.
  • Preferably have experience conducting interviews with vulnerable victims in the field of human rights.
  • It is preferable to have experience in OHCHR methodologies in the field of human rights monitoring, reporting and investigation.
  • Fluency in English.
  • It is preferable to have a working knowledge of the Arabic language.
  • Fluency in the Kurdish language.
  • Master's degree or equivalent in the field of human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Communication skills.
  • Integrity and professionalism in work.
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • Skills of working within a team.
  • UN staff in Iraq operate in a volatile security environment with staff in Erbil working in a secure compound with limited access outside the city, which can usually only be done with strict permits and with military escort, depending on the destination.
  • Erbil is a non-family duty station and is classified as a medium security risk. UN staff in Erbil live in Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS).
  • International staff working in Iraq must obtain the necessary online security awareness prior to their arrival in Iraq and undertake mandatory Security Awareness Training (SAIT) upon arrival.
  • The Rest and Recuperation (R&R) period in Erbil is 8 weeks long, and the R&R location is Amman, Jordan.
  • There are currently UN flights (UN-AMI and UNHAS) to and from Iraq, covering Iraq, Kuwait and Jordan. There are many international flights to Erbil, Baghdad and Basra. Since this is a specialized assignment for international UN Volunteers, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his or her own accommodation and other living essentials.
  • International UN Volunteers will receive a Voluntary Living Allowance to maintain a basic, and safe lifestyle. This allowance varies from location to location depending on the local cost of living, but all UN Volunteer international professionals in the same location receive the same allowance. These allowances are intended to enable international UN Volunteers to maintain a modest and safe standard of living at the duty station. The allowances mustn't be understood as compensation, reward, or salary for volunteer work.
  • All international UN Volunteer professionals are entitled to a monthly volunteer living allowance of US$3,896.383. 
  • The purpose of this allowance is to cover basic living costs for international United Nations Volunteers.
