Opportunity description
The United Nations Volunteers Program offers a volunteer opportunity in Jordan as an assistant to its legal officer. As a member of the Law Unit, you will contribute to the implementation of the Global Program for the Promotion of the Rule of Law, Human Rights, Justice, and Security for Sustainable Peace and Development. The mission of the UN Volunteers will include providing support at the regional and country levels in the areas of law and human rights, under the guidance of law, security, and human rights specialist. Your responsibilities will include organizing various events and discussions, conducting research, supporting project/program implementation at the regional level and with country offices, and assisting in the development of project documents, concept notes, and any other related tasks as directed by your supervisor and team leader.
Duties & responsibilities
You will be responsible for each of the following, under the direct supervision of the Regional Lead on the Rule of Law, Security, and Human Rights and under the overall direction of the Regional Team Leader on Governance and Peacebuilding:
- Identify areas of knowledge exchange based on needs, trends, and capabilities, with a focus on South-South cooperation.
- Contribute to the mapping of good practices, case studies, innovations, and pilots for wider dissemination and sharing.
- Provide the necessary support for the country office program.
- Contribute to drafting and editing papers and policy briefs on development challenges related to the rule of law.
- Conducting research and analysis on the rule of law, justice, and human rights to advance United Nations development programs.
- Provide inputs to the development of new regional initiatives and support the implementation of existing initiatives.
- Contribute to regional initiatives for the rule of law.
- Provide necessary support to regional initiatives, including inputs for program planning, implementation and monitoring, and drafting of relevant project documents, such as notes, abstracts, talking points, and minutes.
- Drafting and contributing to concept notes, agendas, and other relevant documents for initiatives at the regional level.
- Contribute to the formulation of communication products (graphs, social media, flyers).

Eligibility criteria
You must:
- Be between 18 and 26 years old.
- Candidates must be nationals of any country other than the country of appointment.
- Show interest in the area of the rule of law (mainly justice and human rights).
- Familiarity with the areas of the rule of law and human rights challenges in the Arab States region.
- It is preferred that you have previous experience as a volunteer.
- Experience in the field of legal affairs, or administration.
- Proficiency in English.
- It is preferred that you have a working knowledge of the Arabic language.
- It is preferred that you have a working knowledge of the French language.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in the field of law, human rights, international relations, political science, or public administration.
