Opportunity description

Search for Common Ground is offering an internship with the Central and Southern Africa (CSA) team in the Washington DC headquarters in the USA for 2020. The intern will support the team in providing programmatic and logistical support to Search’s projects in the region. The Summer internship begins in May and typically lasts at least three months. Search for Common Ground implements more than 20 peacebuilding and conflict transformation programs throughout Central and Southern Africa. From working with journalists and government officials in Central African Republic to stop the spread of hate speech, engaging security forces and civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo to rebuild trust and restore human security, to facilitating engagement between mining companies and local communities in Madagascar. The programs help to create a space where  actors from across dividing lines can work collaboratively to address conflicts and reduce violence. Search’s Central and Southern Africa (CSA) portfolio includes Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Madagascar. 

Qualifications:

Essential:

  1. Strong writing, editing and communication skills.
  2. A self-starting, detail-oriented and flexible approach to tasks.
  3. Demonstrable interest in the CSA region and/or conflict resolution. 
  4. Ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines. 
  5. Excellent attention to detail. 
  6. Ability to read French. 
  7. Hours: This position requires a commitment of no less than twenty hours a week.  

Desirable: 

  1. Fluency or advanced proficiency in French.
  2. Degree in relevant subject.
  3. Interest and knowledge of conflict resolution. 
  4. Experience working at a non-governmental organization/non-profit or similar environment.
  5. International experience.
  6. Undergraduates (juniors and seniors), graduate students, and recent graduates are welcome to apply.
