Associate Communications Officer Position with the United Nations in Damascus 2026

The selected candidate will support communications and media strategies, monitor traditional and digital media, produce communications content, develop outreach campaigns, and strengthen relationships with media outlets and key stakeholders. The Associate Communications Officer will be responsible for:

1. Collecting and analysing information obtained through monitoring traditional media, digital media, and social media platforms.
2. Monitoring public discourse and risks related to the organization’s reputation.
3. Contributing to the development and implementation of communications strategies aimed at increasing awareness, engagement, and support.
4. Preparing communications messages and media narratives related to the work of the United Nations.
5. Adapting content for different channels, platforms, and target audiences.
6. Developing media maps and databases of media outlets and press institutions.
7. Building and maintaining relationships with traditional and digital media.
8. Preparing communications messages for sensitive issues and crisis situations.
9. Supporting the organization of press conferences, briefings, and media events.
10. Representing the organization as a spokesperson when required.
11. Producing communications content suitable for different digital platforms.
12. Drafting press releases, statements, and stories for publication on websites.
13. Preparing reports, infographics, and other communications materials.
14. Contributing to the design and implementation of communications campaigns.
15. Developing strategic communications partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
16. Supporting field-based awareness and advocacy campaigns.
17. Preparing interviews, news reports, radio programmes, and podcasts.
18. Organizing media coverage for events, campaigns, and joint activities.

Applicants must hold an advanced university degree, such as a Master’s degree or equivalent, in one of the following fields:

• Communications
• Journalism
• International Relations
• Digital Communications
• Or another related field

A Bachelor’s degree may be accepted instead of an advanced university degree, provided that the applicant has two additional years of qualifying professional experience.

Professional Experience

Applicants must have:

1. At least two years of progressively responsible professional experience in:
   • Communications
   • International Relations
   • Or another related field
2. Knowledge of information integrity risks, including:
   • Misinformation
   • Disinformation
   • Hate speech
   • Threats in fragile, conflict-affected, and crisis environments
3. Knowledge of media monitoring tools.
