The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has announced an opening for the position of Associate Programme Officer – Renewable Energy Site Assessment at the P-2 level, to work at the Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre at the agency’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The selected officer will contribute to supporting member countries in assessing the initial feasibility of solar and wind energy project sites, preparing energy production models, and analyzing the technical and financial feasibility of proposed sites. The role also involves developing site assessment services to include new renewable energy technologies and applications.

Duties & responsibilities
The officer’s responsibilities include:
- Supporting countries in using the preliminary feasibility assessment service for renewable energy sites.
- Calculating energy production profiles and patterns needed for transmission grid and power system stability studies.
- Contributing to the assessment of the technical and financial potential of solar energy sites and onshore and offshore wind energy sites.
- Developing site assessment services to include new technologies and end-use energy applications.
- Contributing to the modeling of power purchase agreement options.
- Supporting the development of power grid stability simulations.
- Preparing and writing reports related to renewable energy resource assessment.
- Supporting the activities of the renewable energy resource assessment team.
- Coordinating with other teams and departments within IRENA on renewable energy resource topics.
- Participating in the design and implementation of communication and outreach activities.
- Preparing training materials, presentations, talking points, and inputs for senior management.
- Assisting in organizing and delivering workshops.
- Performing any other duties related to the position.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a master’s degree in engineering with a specialization in renewable energy, or a bachelor’s degree with appropriate additional professional experience.
- Have at least two years of practical experience in renewable energy resource assessment.
- Have advanced knowledge of renewable energy potential assessment, preliminary site feasibility assessment, and energy production modeling.
- Possess strong skills in quantitative analysis, data analysis, and the use of Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of the Python programming language is preferred.
- Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
- Ability to prepare technical reports and work within international multidisciplinary teams.
- Meet the employment requirements of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and be able to work in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
