Opportunity description

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is offering an online volunteer opportunity titled Communications Support to assist its Regional Office for Southern Africa in communications, advocacy, and public outreach. The selected volunteer will work remotely with the Public Information Officer to support the development and review of communication materials, key messages, campaigns, articles, speeches, social media content, and materials published across OHCHR's internal and external platforms.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Hold a university degree in Communications or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Preferably possess 5 years of experience in media, communications, and multimedia content development.
  • Demonstrate a strong background in communication tools, media production, and content development.
  • Be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Be capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to deliver high-quality work accurately, clearly, and within established deadlines.
  • Applicants must have access to their own design and media production tools, such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite, as these tools will not be provided by the host organization.

Eligibility criteria

  • Develop, draft, and review communications and advocacy content.
  • Create communication concepts, key messages, and campaign messaging materials.
  • Write human-interest stories, impact stories, and success stories.
  • Draft and review briefing notes, speeches, opinion articles, and other communication products.
  • Support content development for the OHCHR website and internal platforms.
  • Contribute to the preparation of newsletters for the United Nations and partner organizations.
  • Develop content for social media platforms and podcasts when required.
  • Review and edit reports, policy briefs, and other relevant documents.
  • Ensure that all materials comply with the OHCHR Editorial Style Guide and communication standards.
  • Support the alignment and consistency of communication messages across different platforms and channels.
