Opportunity description

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is offering an online volunteer opportunity titled Video Editing, Animation, and Graphic Design Support to assist its Regional Office for Southern Africa in producing visual and multimedia materials that strengthen communications and advocacy efforts. The selected volunteer will work with the Public Information Officer and communication teams to create content for social media, websites, reports, newsletters, brochures, infographics, and other visual communication products.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Produce visual designs and graphic materials for reports, publications, newsletters, brochures, and informational resources.
  • Create visual content for social media platforms and websites.
  • Develop initial design concepts based on team requirements and discuss them with the communications focal point.
  • Refine and finalize designs according to agreed specifications and feedback.
  • Support the development of social media messages and content in collaboration with the Public Information Officer and OHCHR staff.
  • Design materials that showcase the achievements, impact, and results of the Regional Office’s work.
  • Ensure all visual products comply with OHCHR’s visual identity guidelines and design standards.
  • Contribute to communications and advocacy campaigns through engaging visual content.
  • Help improve the clarity, accessibility, and visual appeal of human rights and communication materials.
  • Support the use of visual storytelling techniques to effectively communicate key messages and project outcomes.

Eligibility criteria

  • Demonstrated professional experience in graphic design.
  • Previous experience in the design, layout, and formatting of documents, publications, and reports.
  • Strong knowledge of graphic design software and creative design tools.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Experience in video editing and motion graphics is highly desirable.
  • A degree or certification in Graphic Design or a related field is considered an asset.
  • At least two years of professional experience in multimedia, communications, or related creative fields is preferred.
  • Applicants must have access to their own design and media production tools, such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent software, as these will not be provided by the host organization.
