UNICEF announces an internship opportunity at its Gulf Area Office in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Child Rights. The internship aims to support UNICEF’s work in studying how to engage governments in Gulf Cooperation Council countries on issues related to artificial intelligence, child protection, and ensuring that children’s rights and voices are represented in policies and strategies related to modern technologies.

The internship focuses on understanding the role of artificial intelligence in shaping children’s lives, especially in areas such as digital education, protection, humanitarian response, and governance. The intern will also conduct research on AI trends in Gulf countries and propose partnership and program models that can help develop solutions that take children’s best interests and rights into consideration.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Study UNICEF’s strategy related to artificial intelligence and prepare a presentation for partners.
  • Research the trends of Gulf Cooperation Council countries regarding the use of artificial intelligence with and for children.
  • Support the design of working models with Gulf countries in the field of artificial intelligence from a partnerships and programs perspective.
  • Propose models for engaging youth in discussions related to artificial intelligence.
  • Contribute to research on artificial intelligence governance and the protection of child rights.
  • Support efforts related to the use of artificial intelligence in humanitarian contexts and emergency response, while taking children’s best interests into consideration.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, master’s, or PhD program, or have graduated within the past two years.
  2. Preferably have an academic background related to international development or relevant fields.
  3. Have a clear interest in artificial intelligence and the related political and ethical discussions.
  4. Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: English, French, or Spanish, along with proficiency in the working language of the internship office.
  5. Have a strong academic record.
  6. Be at least 18 years old.
  7. Have no immediate relatives working in any UNICEF office.
  8. Have skills such as collaboration, strategic thinking, innovation, partnership building, and the ability to deal with ambiguity and complexity.
