Opportunity description

The United Nations has opened applications for the position of Associate Communications Officer within the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Damascus, Syria, under the National Professional Officer (NO-B) category in the field of public information and communications.

The position focuses on supporting the United Nations’ efforts in strategic communications, digital media, media monitoring, content production, campaign management, and engagement with the public and partners, as well as analyzing media data and trends to support decision-making and improve the impact of communication activities.

The selected candidate will work at the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in Damascus under the direct supervision of the Head of Office, as part of efforts to support development priorities and advance the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

Duties & responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and analyzing traditional, social, and digital media to identify public trends and potential reputational risks to the organization.
  • Contributing to the implementation of communication strategies aimed at raising awareness, increasing engagement, and supporting United Nations priorities.
  • Developing key messages and narratives about the work of the United Nations for different audiences and platforms.
  • Contributing to the creation and updating of media databases and maintaining communication with media organizations and platforms.
  • Building and strengthening relationships with traditional and new media outlets.
  • Supporting the development of media messaging, including communications related to crises and sensitive issues.
  • Assisting in organizing press conferences, briefings, and media events.
  • Serving as a spokesperson for the organization when required.
  • Producing engaging content tailored to different channels, platforms, and audiences.
  • Preparing and producing communication materials such as press releases, web stories, reports, and infographics.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of media and communication campaigns and measuring their impact.
  • Developing strategic communication partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supporting awareness-raising, advocacy, and direct public engagement campaigns.
  • Contributing to the preparation of interviews, news content, radio programmes, and podcasts for the United Nations or local communities.
  • Preparing and updating policies, guidelines, and training materials related to strategic communications.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest trends and technologies in media and digital communications.
  • Analyzing the performance of communication campaigns and activities and preparing reports on their effectiveness.
  • Collecting and analyzing data, identifying trends and patterns, and preparing charts, tables, reports, and data visualizations.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:
  • Be Syrian nationals, as the position is open exclusively to citizens of Syria.
  • Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following fields:
    • Communications.
    • Journalism.
    • International Relations.
    • Digital Communications.
    • Or a related field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree may be accepted in place of a Master’s degree, provided the applicant has an additional two years of qualifying professional experience beyond the basic experience requirement.
  • Academic study or training in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.
  • Have at least two years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, international relations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrate proven knowledge of information integrity risks, including disinformation, misinformation, hate speech, and threats in fragile, conflict-affected, or crisis environments.
  • Possess skills in collecting, processing, and analyzing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
  • Have knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices.

The following are also desirable:

  • Experience with data visualization tools and creating charts and visual outputs.
  • Knowledge of modern media and digital platforms and emerging technologies.
  • At least one year of experience in data analysis or a related field.
  • Skills in data storytelling, including the development of infographics, dashboards, and interactive reports.
