Opportunity description

The United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) is inviting applications for the position of Regional Director based in Amman, Jordan.

The Regional Director will lead the regional office, support the United Nations Resident Coordinator system, and strengthen cooperation among UN agencies, governments, and regional and international institutions. The role contributes to accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This is a senior leadership position suitable for experienced professionals with extensive expertise in development cooperation, policy formulation, programme management, international partnership building, and the leadership of multinational teams in complex international environments.

Duties & responsibilities

The Regional Director will be responsible for:

  • Leading the regional office and overseeing the implementation of work plans and budgets.
  • Supporting United Nations Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams across the region.
  • Strengthening collaboration with governments, regional organizations, and international institutions.
  • Developing multi-country partnerships and programmes that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Leading resource mobilization efforts and building strategic partnerships with donors.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of United Nations Cooperation Frameworks.
  • Providing strategic guidance on sustainable development, risk management, and innovation.
  • Representing the United Nations at regional and international meetings, conferences, and high-level forums.
  • Overseeing the management of the regional office's human and financial resources.
  • Leading digital transformation and innovation initiatives across the office.
  • Monitoring the implementation of United Nations reform initiatives and reporting on performance and results.
  • Overseeing talent acquisition, staff development, and capacity-building initiatives.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following fields:
    • International Relations
    • Public Administration
    • Law
    • Social Sciences
    • Or another related discipline
  • A bachelor’s degree may be accepted with an additional two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Have at least 15 years of professional experience in development cooperation, including a minimum of 10 years in senior leadership positions within international environments.
  • Have at least five years of field experience in international development.
  • Demonstrate experience in developing sustainable development strategies and policies.
  • Possess experience in change management and institutional reform.
  • Have experience managing programmes, administrative operations, and financial resources.
  • Experience within the United Nations Resident Coordinator system or a comparable international organization is preferred.
  • Professional experience in the Arab region is considered an asset.
  • Experience in digital transformation, data analysis, and innovation is desirable.
  • Demonstrate experience in resource mobilization and building international partnerships.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Proficiency in Arabic is considered an asset.
