Opportunity description

The International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) is the most prestigious and important literary prize in the Arab world. Its aim is to reward excellence in contemporary Arabic creative writing and to encourage the readership of high-quality Arabic literature internationally through the translation and publication of winning and shortlisted novels in other major languages. The annual International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) is given to a novel in Arabic which IPAF's judges consider to be the best of that year.

Rules of Entry:

  • IPAF is dedicated to the literary novel. Books of short stories or collections of poetry are not eligible
  • Electronic books are not eligible
  • Authors cannot submit their own work: submissions are to be made by eligible publishers but this must be done in consultation with the authors.
  • An eligible publisher is one who has been in business at least 2 years and who is an active publisher with a catalogue or list of its fiction titles demonstrating its activity and which is publicly available
  • The novel must be written in Arabic: Arabic translations of a book originally written in any other language are not eligible
  • Authors must be living at the time of the award
  • The novel must be published between July 2016 and June 2019
  • The Administrator of the Prize is unable to return any books entered by publishers or called in by the judges

The Award:

The winner announcement takes place at a gala ceremony in Abu Dhabi in spring. The shortlisted authors each receive $10,000 US. The winning author goes on to receive a further $50,000 US, with a commitment that IPAF will meet the cost of translation of the winning novel into English to help underwrite its publication for an English speaking readership.
