The Siena Art Institute Onlus offers summer residency program for artists in various disciplines in the beautiful historic city of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy.
Benefits
Summer Resident Artists are provided:
- A private studio at the Siena Art Institute for four weeks.
- A private 1-bedroom apartment in downtown Siena for their month-long stay (one double bed).
- Compensation for flight to and from Italy from the country of residence.
In turn, Resident Artists are asked to give back to the Siena Art Institute in several ways:
- Presenting a public talk about their work upon arrival in Siena.
- Interacting with program participants through an organized activity, such as an afternoon master-class or critiques of student work.
While not required, Resident Artists are also invited to:
- Hold at one or more open studios/exhibitions/performances/screenings during their residency.
- Lead workshops with the Siena Art Institute’s summer program participants or members of the local community.
Eligibility criteria
- Artists and writers from any discipline may apply, including but not limited to photography, creative writing, printmaking, performance, sculpture, painting, drawing, choreography, film, video, musical composition, ceramics, installation art, and performance arts.
- Admission is competitive to all the Siena Art Institute Residency Programs.
- Prospective Summer Residents must complete the residency application and must present a personal portfolio that demonstrates professional accomplishment as an artist, and a proclivity for artistic experimentation, and an interest in sharing their artistic passion with others.
- Summer Resident artists should have earned an MFA degree or have equivalent professional accomplishments, such as extensive exhibition history and/or publications.
- Resident artists must be fluent in either English, Italian, ASL (American Sign Language), or LIS (Italian Sign Language).
- Residents are not able to work with toxic materials and certain other hazardous materials within the Siena Art Institute. Please see the List of Materials & Restrictions for more information.
- Small groups of artists or writers (2 to 3 individuals) wishing to work collaboratively may apply for a shared residency. However, the Siena Art Institute can only fund travel for one individual and a one-bedroom flat. In this case, work samples submitted in support of the nomination should represent previous collaborations together.
- Summer Residents are asked to remain in Siena during the weekdays of their residency and to limit their travel outside of Siena to the weekends or before/after their residency period.
- Summer Residents are not permitted to host overnight guests in their apartments.
About Siena Art Institute Onlus:
The Siena Art Institute Onlus is a small non-profit arts organization based in the heart of Siena, Italy. It led both a unique study abroad experience for Undergraduate or Post-Baccalaureate art & writing students. We also host Intensive Summer Courses, City Arts Programs, Residencies, Project Fellowships, and a Visiting Artist Program. Siena Art Institute Onlus was inaugurated in 2011. Its program has emerged from our partner program, the Siena School for Liberal Arts, which has led arts & humanities courses in Siena since 2004.
