Opportunity description

Lincoln University in New Zealand is offering number of scholarships for graduate students who wish to pursue PhD study and research in philosophy. These scholarships will be given based on academic merit, experience and previous research. 

Eligibility: 

  • Scholarships will be open to applicants who have gained entrance into a Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University.
  • If a candidate awarded a scholarship does not become eligible to register for Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University by 1 March in the year following the award, then the award will lapse.
  • Applicants must be new to the Lincoln University Doctoral Program at the commencement of the Semester immediately following the award OR have registered for the Lincoln University Doctoral Program no more than six months prior to the closing date of applications. Applicants in the latter category who have presented their research proposal will not normally be considered for the scholarship.

Selection Criteria: 

The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria: 

  •  Academic Merit : A minimum grade point average equating to an A- (80%) average is required in order to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  •  Research or other relevant experience.

Scholarship Duration: 

The following conditions of tenure shall apply: 

  1. Every scholarship shall be tenable for a maximum of three years from the commencement date of the tenure of the scholarship, unless the candidate is already registered for a PhD as stated in (3) below.
  2. The tenure of the scholarship shall begin at the commencement of the Semester immediately following the award.
  3. Where an applicant for a scholarship has been registered for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy prior to the commencement of the scholarship, the tenure of the Scholarship shall be reduced by the period the applicant has already been registered for that degree. 

During the tenure of the scholarship, every scholar shall be enrolled as a full-time student for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University.

Payments: 

  • The value of the scholarships shall be determined by the Vice-Chancellor. The emolument shall be paid by fortnightly installments in arrears, according to the tenure of the scholarship.
  • The first payment shall be made as soon as practical after the student has registered for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University.
  • In addition to the emolument the scholarship covers an amount equivalent to the New Zealand students’ tuition fee for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Lincoln University, provided that Lincoln University’s contribution towards fees will be reduced by an amount equal to the sum available for fees from any other scholarship received by the student up to the value of the relevant New Zealand students’ tuition fee. This amount is payable annually by way of a credit in the scholar’s fees account. 
  • At the request of the scholar, the amount of the emolument may be reduced to an amount specified by the scholar.
