Opportunity description

The University of Queensland in Australia is offering a Ph.D. scholarship on the development of exciting new PHA based biodegradable bioplastics and biocomposites for the transition to a new and sustainable plastic economy. Biodegradable bioplastics and biocomposites will be pivotal in the transition to a more sustainable plastics economy, with the production capacity of the important biodegradable biopolymer PHA being estimated to more than triple in the next five years. It is estimated that, in Europe alone, the number of people employed in the bioplastics sector could increase by more than ten-fold by 2030, with up to 300,000 high-skilled jobs being created.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Meeting the GPA requirement. Select where you studied and your qualification to see the GPA you need to be considered for this program. Here
  • You need one of the following approved degrees to apply for a Ph.D.:
    • Master of Philosophy (or another research master’s degree); or
    • Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with at least honors class IIA or equivalent; or
    • Coursework master’s degree with an overall grade point average of 5.65 on the 7-point UQ scale which includes relevant research experience, approved by the dean; or
    • Postgraduate degree (at least one year full-time or equivalent) with an overall grade point average of 5 on the 7-point UQ scale, together with demonstrated research experience equivalent to honors class IIA will be considered on a case-by-case basis; or
    • Bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years of relevant research experience, including research publications.
  • An approved degree needs to be: in an area relevant to your proposed Ph.D. project and completed no more than 10 years ago.
  • You need to demonstrate some research experience to be accepted into a Ph.D.
  • Meeting English language requirements:
    • IELTS: Minimum overall score = 6.5
    • TOEFL (paper-based): Minimum overall score =570
    • TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum overall score =       87

Scholarship Value:

  • The scholarship amount is $ 12,000 per annum. 
  • Scholarship duration:  4 years.

Selection Criteria:

  • Applications will be judged on a competitive basis taking into account the applicant’s previous academic record, publication record, honors and awards, and employment history.
  • Candidates will have a background in chemical/materials engineering or science with a preference for some background in polymer science. 
  • Experience in modeling is not necessary but strong mathematical capabilities are desirable.
